Contract workers are laying the base for the artificial surface that will be installed soon at Tinker’s football/soccer field. Earlier this month the original grass sod was removed and several inches of dirt were bulldozed throughout the interior perimeter of the base running track. Corey Emerson, foreman for Double E Construction of Gas, Kan., said his crew laid a 30-millimeter-thick liner over the excavated area, and now they are spreading two layers of crushed stone, with use of a laser to level the site. After the entire project is completed, any water that falls onto the field will soak through the artificial turf, seep through the gravel base and onto the liner, then flow into drainage pipes that are being buried at the edge of the running track. Since the football/soccer field is being reconstructed at a 1 percent grade, the drainage pipes will direct the runoff to a storm sewer. The preparatory work on the field is expected to be finished by the end of next week, Emerson estimated. Afterward, the prime contractor, FieldTurf USA of Calhoun, Ga., will install 101,000 square feet of synthetic turf over the gravel base inside the running track. A spokeswoman for the prime contractor previously said that installation of the artificial surface would take approximately one month to complete. The eighth season of spring intramural flag football at Tinker will start “perhaps in mid-March,” following completion of the football/soccer field, Tinker Sports Coordinator Chris Gaines said Wednesday. “It’s still up in the air at the moment,” he said.
